@tech_e1264c41 Well, Heres an up to speed for Volvo. Just a normal day to day of what you will see. I'm not "trying" to trash the brand, as I did really like the cars. The labor times are pretty bad but they arent horrid if you live in New York where warranty times must be equivalent to customer pay times. Im sure Im missimg some things here, but any Volvo tech will see this list and go "Yup, sounds about right."
Tools: Get yourself an Aircat Stubby impact gun for rear caliper bolts. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. Get used to the NIKE hydraulic press, and make sure either you or the dealership has the control arm bender 5000 for getting the knuckles out of the ball joints.
XC40: EVAP Valves (you do not need to drop the subframe) Upper strut bushings (easy but PITA)
XC70: P2- holds up better than P2 XC90 but many parts unavailable through dealership (every single one has a leaking PS rack, and no you can't get one anywhere)
P3- RTAB bushings, power steering hoses, Blower motor reaistors, Blower motors (they suck)
XC90: P2- Always clapped out (don't bother quoting anything other than what it needs and get it out the door, by this time the transmission / cats are likely going to fail soon anyway, mechanically totalling the car anyways)
SPA- Center Console chrome trim
Check sunroof for shrunken seals (blow out drains while glass is removed)
Check upper taillight bolts (if the tail light moves replace it)
Evaporator cores (check front and rears)
AC compressor Pressure line.
(If you drive enough XC90s you will eventually want one, they are actually nice to drive, and you can generally pick them up cheap needing pistons, but by this time, you will have done so many that it will be a basic service to you, and you can flip them quickly)
General engine advise.
T5 (FIVE Cyl): Get ready to replace piston rings at a moments notice, check Number 2 rod bearing for scoreing and if its been chewing oil long enough make the client aware the cats are likely junk too. Oil separator. (Just do it)
T6 (SIX Cyl): Volvos best modern engine, Low failure rates, but also, hope you never have to open one up. Timing is complex and has time and temperature values for removing and installing parts. PCV valves are common.
T5 (FOUR Cyl): Pistons. (Rings come with new pistons), PCV whistle. EVAP valves.
T6 (FOUR Cyl): Pistons (more frequently) Supercharger rebuilds, PCV whistle. EVAP valves.
B6: Failing oil pumps, the worse the maintenance, the faster it blows up. Other than that, I left the dealership before they started getting age related issues.
ELECTRIC CARS. get ready to learn how to rebuild ERADs. And waiting for corporate to approve work. The bearings are trash, and every single one will likely end up recalled in the next few years. They aren't "quite" at the level of being junk, but they dont like being driven hard.
