A lot of us negotiate individually, so if nobody talks about compensation, it’s hard to know whether the market, or even our own shop, is paying fairly. Lets talk about things like hourly/flat-rate pay, raises, bonuses, guarantees, and what qualifications helped you negotiate better pay. I’m not trying to stir anything up or turn it into “who makes more than who.” I think it would be useful for technicians to have a better understanding of what the actual pay ranges are based on: STATE, BRAND, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS, PRODUCTIVITY, YEARS IN INDUSTRY, & POSITION

10 years experience.

Previously was at $60 an hour Master Cert Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley. 40 hour guarantee. 5 years experience with those brands.

But recently left for a less stressful brand for $50 an hour, but book more hours and have way more free time. And basically zero warranty work. Mostly CP and Internal. With 40 hour guarantee.

I personally will never work somewhere without a guarantee, dealers can afford a bad week every now and again.

Toyota dealer, central Texas, 13 years experience, 10 years with the brand. 52 flat rate with a small bonus for “lead tech” helping out younger techs. I also teach on the side so that impacts my flagging. I do about 2500-3000 hours a year

Ford, Utah. About two years of experience. I do mostly recalls and some electrical diagnosis. I get paid $27/hour with a $2/hour bonus if my ROs have videos 90% of the time or more. I also get a bonus for flagging more than the average of my last three pay periods. Up to 20% more is $2.50/hour, 20-24% is $3.50/hour, 25%+ is $5/hour. We also get a $5/hour bonus in the summer for not having AC in the shop. So from June 1 to August 31 I could earn up to $39/hour if I hit every bonus. There doesn’t seem to be any incentive to get training done from a payment perspective as the training pay is less than my actual wage.

tech_4771ea16 The bonuses for beating you rolling average are fine when you are new and learning, but is there a plan to get off that eventually? At a certain point, you won't be able to progress as much as you may be able to early.

13 ish years at a Honda in Western Canada. We currently get $43/hr . $2 more an hour on a diagnosis(provided it’s customer pay and you actually get paid), and $2 dollars more an hour when your working on an EV(which we only have one model, and it’s such a nightmare everytime that you lose time working on it anyways). We get a bonus $1 per hour if we make 250hrs or more in a month . Our door rate ranges anywhere from $190 to $260? I’ve seen because they use some sort of price matrix that makes no sense (the more hours we quote the higher the shop rate? I think is how it works ). Parts mark up is at the least 90% as far as I can tell.

Certified audi technician I am 2 years in. Working in Ontario Canada making 41/hr A rate (recalls, mechanical work) 29.50 B rate (services, alignments tires and brakes) even if i had HVT or HVE my pay rate would still be the same

25 years in the industry currently in California. Master tech, lead diagnostic tech, team lead, gm gold certified wtf that means, Nissan master technician, hybrid, electric, taker of all pains. Currently on an hr plus bonus on every hour the entire shop flags avg 56-64 dollars an hr base is 33.80 plus 5 bucks every hour flagged
